These single celled protozoans form branching colonies in freshwater streams or ponds. Each individual is composed of a bell shaped body lined with cilia and a long stalk. Confocal microscopes create optical slices of specimens. Laser light from the microscope causes the stained specimen to fluoresce and reveal variations in structures. Cilia are coloured blue and cell nuclei are yellow-orange.
