Painting - Encaustic Painting On Birch Panel
A red cardinal perches on a branch of a winter tree set in a hilly snow landscape. The original painting was created with encaustics on a wooden birch panel.
Encaustic paintings are made with beeswax and damar, a natural tree resin. It's an ancient medium that began with the Romans 4,000 years ago and is now making a resurgence.
Encaustics have a transparent luminosity and tactile quality unparalleled in other media. Interesting textures are made with waxy layers that are scraped, incised and fused for effect.
Enjoy the shimmering qualities of "Cardinal's Solstice" which is readily reproduced on canvas, paper or metal.
