Description

Carthage Jail Bullet Hole Door 15. Honoring Hyrum Smith, Martyr of God.

Hyrum Smith, Martyr of God.

Great Husband, Remarkable Father, President, Patriarch, Apostle, Eye Witness to the Book of Mormon
and the Restoration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
Older Brother of Joseph Smith, A man of immense integrity and without guile.

Poem By Richard W Linford

Rode with Joseph to Carthage on that summer day;
Joseph and Hyrum did lay down their hammers to pray;
Like lambs to the slaughter refusing to save mortal self;
Choosing instead there at Carthage to engrave himself ;
There with brave Joseph on walls in the great halls of martyrs.

Rode slowly to Carthage in that summer Son;
Beat on his shoulders and they were as one;
Promised protection just for appearing;
Knowing intuitively death was fast nearing;
Imprisoned without bail as well without hearing;
Brought up on false charges of treason mob jeering.

He sang there with Joseph and wayfaring men;
He stood there in Christ and their lives did defend;
Was jailed there with friends in their best summer season;
Was jailed in one room it was so without reason;
Singing together with wayfaring men.

With blackened mob faces they stormed up the stairwell.
On finding resistance they fired through the door;
Iím a dead man he said as he fell to the floor;
Firing that ball through the door oh how cowardly;
Fighting together they died there for glory.
Died there together on that sacred day;
Lived there together the saints still do pray.

He was struck in the face on the left of his nose;
He was smashed in his face the ball took his repose;
Was twice dead for a ball from outside hit his back;
Passed through body and soul;
Hit his watch the attack;

How on earth could this happen to some?
Carthage Jailís blackened stained infamy;
For they know not what they have done;
Each mob suffers from insanity.

He rode slowly to Heavenís Gate that summer Son;
Beat on his shoulders and they were as one;
No protection now needed forever you see;
His bright crown is eternally given;
For he sealed with his blood and he manfully has striven;
He does ride now with Joseph forever in glory!
Seed of martyrs do weep as they tell his great story.

Rode with Joseph to Heaven on hot summer day;
Joseph and Hyrum did lay down their hammers to pray;
Like lamb to the slaughter refusing to recuse himself;
Choosing instead there at Carthage to engrave himself ;
With brave Joseph on walls in the great hall of martyrs.
