Description
This is the Kingston skyline from the eighth floor of the Deerfield Condo building as seen at 16:37 pm on Saturday January 7th, 2017. The cold air mass was converted into towers of cumulus over the relatively warm waters of Lake Ontario. There were certainly flurries underneath those towers. Wolfe Island was just a small purple line on the horizon. This island was named afterBritish General James Wolfe but has known many names during its time. The Mohawk people called this island "Ganounkouesnot" which translates as 'Long Island Standing up'. The French called it 'Grand Ile'. 'Purple line on the horizon' is an equally valid name. The Cataraqui Causeway was equally subtle. I was faithful to reproduce the buildings that identify the Kingston skyline.
The stands of cirrus also have a story to tell. The ice crystals were at several different levels in the atmosphere right up to the tropopause. Gravity waves in the stable layers were perpendicular to the wind direction at each level. A subsidence inversion with the approaching ridge of high pressure was responsible for even more gravity waves and apparently a chaotic wind field. There were clues of southwesterly winds at the tropopause over the predominantly northwesterly winds at lower levels. Backing winds with height means cold advection and that is what we were experiencing for sure.
