Dr. Hartman left a medical practice around the turn of the 20th century and began selling quack cure alls. Here is a newspaper ad for his bestseller PE-RU-NA that claimed to cure Catarrh and became the most sought after cure in America at the time.
Catarrh began as Bronchitis or mucous, but the quacks soon expanded the definition to cover just about every ailment. In a time when many snake oils contained cannabis, cocaine, or opium, PE-RU-NA contained 27% alcohol.
It sold for $1 per bottle and Dr. Hartman made an 85 cent profit on each sold. At one time, he was pulling in $100,000 each day from his Columbus, Ohio factory. When he died, his estate was worth 10 to 12 million dollars.
