Description
Charles Frederick Chandler (1836-1925), US chemist. Chandler pioneered food, drug, health and environmental laws in the USA. Like Wiley, another food laws pioneer, Chandler went to Germany to study with the pre-eminent chemists of the day. Back in the USA, he worked with the Metropolitan Board of Health in New York City between 1867 and 1883. He improved vaccinations, milk supplies, sanitation, clean water and building regulations. He also worked on regulating food and cosmetic products to prevent their adulteration. Chandler was one of the driving forces behind the founding of the American Chemical Society in 1876.
