Stunning circa 1515-1524 panorama by Flemish history and landscape painter Joachim Patinir, aka Patenier (circa 1480-1524), showing Charon, ferryman to the Underworld of Greek mythology, crossing a surprisingly attractive-looking River Styx. Although known as Flemish, Patenir was actually from Dinant, in the Wallonian (French-speaking) area of what is now Belgium. This effort from the later period of his tragically short life is one of the most ravishingly colourful paintings in the entire Northern Renaissance canon.
