Chernobyl Turbine Generators
Photograph - Photograph
Chernobyl equipment. View of two turbogenerators used to produce electricity at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine. These units are combined K-500-65 turbines and TBB-500 electrical generators and produce a maximum 500 MW (megawatts). Both turbogenerators are driven by the No.1 reactor at the plant. In 1982, the No.1 reactor suffered a partial meltdown, but was repaired within months. In 1986 the No.4 reactor exploded creating the largest nuclear disaster ever known. Photographed in 1987.
