Chickadees And A Row Of Birch Trees
Tapestry - Textile - Batik On Silk Fabric
I have a bird thing going this time of year....chickadees are still around in their musical way flitting from branch to branch. Not much snow so sepia is the color of winter. There is a moose and her baby walking the alleys of this town....maybe that will be next on silk.
Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Silk is such an ethereal medium to work on.
The way the dyes move around and blend in the boundaries created by the wax. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape.
I use only high quality silk fabric and pure beeswax in my work.
