Description
Commodore Bremer (left of center) requesting Chinese officials to surrender Chusan a day before the British captured the island. Protestant missionary Karl Gützlaff (center) served as interpreter aboard HMS Wellesley. James John Gordon Bremer (September 26,1786 - February 14, 1850) was a British Royal Navy officer. He served twice as commander-in-chief of British forces in the First Anglo-Chinese War from 1839 to 1841. The Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), also known as the Opium War and as the First Opium War, was fought between Britain and China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice for foreign nationals. Zhoushan, formerly transliterated as Chusan, is a prefecture-level city in northeastern Zhejiang province of Eastern China. Entitled "Zusammenkunft zwischen dem englischen Commodore Bremer und Chang, dem chinesischen Gouverneur von Tschusan auf dem schiffe Wellesley am 4 Juli 1841 im Hafen zu Tschusan." Image taken from page 8 of "China, historisch romantisch, malerisch (historically romantic, picturesque). A translation by Thomas Allom with historical and descriptive notes by the Rev. G. N. Wright, published 1843."
