Chlamydia bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Chlamydia sp. bacteria (small blue spheres) in a human cell (large blue sphere). The bacteria are in an inclusion body (yellow) within the cell. Some of the bacteria are reproducing by dividing into two new cells. Chlamydia are Gram-negative round (cocci) bacteria. Several species are pathogenic to humans including, C. trachomatis, which causes the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia, and C. pneumoniae, which causes a form of pneumonia.
