Chlamydia are Gram negative bacteria which pass from cell to cell as tough, spherical (a proteinaceous cage lies just below the outer membrane), spore-like elementary bodies. EBs have spikes (golden) that inject material into the host cells. Chlamydia trachomatis is a major sexually transmitted disease and can go undetected causing infertility. It also causes the eye disease trachoma, which can lead to blindness.
