Description:

This painting is all about choices, enviroment, and the goddess. Mother earth is usually depicted as gentle and nurturing but she has a destructive, violent side as well. Choices in the way we live are required to sustain a livable environment for future generations. Some people don't seem to care what sort of world we leave behind, believe its ours to destroy and that eventually a supernatural force will suddenly appear to magically clean up our collective mess once weve rendered it compleatlyuninhabitable. Why not respect and tread gently upon earth simply because thats the civilized, logical way to exist? Animals don't foul their nests unless theres no other choice, for example whehn humans have contained them in stys or small cages. Maybe we could learn from them. The Mother Goddess offers life or death. Earth hangs in the balance, dangling by a slender thread which she may release at any time. The bee is a druidic symbol for wisdom. The spiral represents the Golden Mean, life journey, evolution. By contrast its the empty dry shell of a snail after the creature within has perished. Hazy moon and stars in the darkness of space are eternity, for they'll endure whatever we decide. Spiderwebs are the living web of energy that connects us all, and yet metaphor for death, decay, and being caught in a cunningly woven trap of one's own making. The Goddess's hair is a tangle of leaves and twigs, red as the fiery core of earth itself, her heart. Blood is life and health, but may also represent violent death and suffering. Gaia's gown is deep blue as the sky, the sea, the Blessed mother's veil, and peaceful healing energy. By contrast blue is also a description of mood and a music genre about hard times. We see a hand filled with profuse circular and spiraling shapes, and the background echos this intricate organic motif. These elements represent healthy life at cellular level. The opposite hand is a bleached skeleton, the absence of life. inside14x18/outside 23x27framed Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Please don't use without permission.
