Description
Cholera prevention. Satirical artwork portraying a man in a pharmacy attempting to protect himself during an outbreak of cholera (represented by the image behind him). Cholera is a bacterial infection of the intestines that was often fatal before modern treatments were developed. Masks, chlorinated lime, smoke, herbs, tobacco, and protective footwear were all used, along with the numerous items that are labelled here in German. This artwork is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
