This fish icon is referred to as an ichthus. It means "fish" in Greek. It is a common symbol representing one who's given their lives to Christ. -- In the first centuries after Jesus' death, Christians were severely persecuted by the Romans. Because of this constant threat, Christians would often use the ichthus symbol to mark meeting places, or to distinguish friends from foes. According to history, when a Christian would meet a stranger along the road, he would often draw one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both Christians knew they were in safe company and could speak openly about their faith.
