Description
Chronic lymphoid leukaemia (CLL). Light micrograph of a section through bone marrow in a case of CLL. An abnormal number of lymphocytes (purple, a type of white blood cell) are seen in the bone marrow. Leukaemia is the excessive production of white blood cells. It is classified by the rate of progression of the disease (acute or chronic) and by the type of cells involved. In this case, it is a slow progression (chronic) of leukaemia of the lymphoid tissue of the lymphatic system. Lymphoid tissue produces lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and antibodies as part of the immune system. Treatment is with drug and immunotherapies and the avoidance of infection.
