Description
Rio de Janeiro, South America, was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese and is the second largest city in Brazil, behind Sao Paulo, with a population exceeding 6.3 million.
Known for its beaches, Ipanema, Copacabana and Lebhio, Carnival at Madri Gras, Sugarloaf Mountain and the giant statue of Christ The Redeemer. It is the host of the 2016 Olympics.
The favela slum areas have continued to improve over recent years and are striving to eliminate the drug dealers and improve the education of their young. The government has helped with military guidance and tourists are now encouraged to visit these emerging areas.
