This is a classic view of the Chateau de Chenonceau and its reflection in the River Cher, after the Palace of Versailles the most visited chateau in France. The original castle was build sometime before the 11th century. It was subsequently burned and rebuilt in the early 1400's and later, except for the keep, destroyed and rebuilt in the early 1500's. King Francis I seized the chateau in 1535 and Henry II gave it to his mistress, Diane de Poitiers, in 1547. It was she who commissioned the building of the arched bridge that joins the chateau to the opposite bank of the Cher. She was also responsible for the planting of elaborate formal gardens, added to later by Queen Catherine. The gardens, located on the castle side of the river (the right as you look at this image), are open to the public.
