Description
A ferel rooster on the island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. These chickens roam the island freely, and some islanders love and feed them, others hate them for the noise. I found them fascinating, as I am a bird person and a chicken lover. I haven't heard a rooster crow for many years until listening to these beautiful birds.
I guess my love for chickens dates back to my childhood pet chicken! I lived on a farm for nearly two years, and each spring my mother bought a hundred or so baby chickens. My sister and I made a pet of one, a hen-to-be. When it came time for mother to slaughter them, our grief knew no bounds. We had a hard time choking down our Sunday chicken dinner, for fear we were eating our pet.
Lesson learned. Don't make pets out of animals you will eventually eat.

Beautiful image, colors and texture Betty! I too raised chickens when I was a child and still have a great fondness for them :))...f/v

Thank you, Donna, chickens are cute, and they are so one-minded, just pecking away!
