Description
Red rock buttes at Sedona in northern Arizona. Here Cockscomb Butte rises proudly above the mountains at west Sedona. I have returned to this spot frequently to paint given the ideal conditions and spectacular views. Words can hardly do justice to the awesome reflection when one is submerged in this type of environment. I simply get on with the task at hand of painting. I watch the clouds closely, anticipating them as they come into view from the west. They persuade themselves into the canvas and help resolve the mood that physically surround me. These moods change as I go from one location to another.
Here in the Sonoras, they are filled with the wisdom of the ages. The disappearance of species and native people, weigh in on this calculated need for modernization. I am reminded of all this in the subtle transference of color from my palette, to the recording of an image that will last beyond my life. Color influences all aspects of one's emotional state, including mood, diet, and psychological need. I learn a little more of the hidden secrets of color whenever I visit my office in the wilds of the world. It is here that my true home resides. In places that I will never visit again. Unlike Neil Armstrong's footprints on the moon, mine are washed away by the earliest wind and rain. After my visit, the desert remains and life continues.
