Coconut palms. Coconut palms, Cocos nucifera, are native plants of the Cocos and Keeling Islands in the Indian Ocean and are now widespread in the tropics where they are put to many uses. It is a slender plant up to 30m high with pinnate leaves from 2m to 6m long. The copious sap found in the fruit is used fresh or fermented to produce toddy; the fibrous outer layer is used in making rope and matting, and the dried white flesh of the seed is used to make copra.
