Thank you, AnnaJo. Yes, I am on my life long quest for "perfect cup of coffee". Some come close early in the morning in my studio. At the end of the painting day I critique my daily work with another cup. All my paintings are created between two cups of coffee.

Merritt Island, Fl - United States

Beautifully conceived and painted. I know what you mean about the coffee. It looks like you are about to have a delicious cup. You are such a master artist! f/v/t

Burnsville, MN - United States

Thank you, Dale. There is no danger that I'll ever get tired to hear comments like yours. I am in doubt that pushing the painting to such level of finish served a good purpose. It was dismissed as a photo many times. That stile of painting in oil is not my dominant way of painting. One who can do more, can do less, they used to say in old Rome. I'll paint more "painterly" from now.

Bronx, NY - United States

Wow, Dan, this is simply amazing. Because of the fine details, I presumed it was a photograph. Then I visited your site to check it out more closely and discovered it's an oil painting. One really needs to use the full resolution option to fully appreciate what you've accomplished here. Yours is truly wonderful art. Voted here and in the "Coffee or Tea" contest.

Thank you, Talya, for featuring "Coffee Balkanica" in the Group.

Burnsville, MN - United States

Thank you, Kathy. For those of you who emailed me with the questions here are some technical info: It was developed in layers. It took 90-100 hours from charcoal drawing study to the finish. Luminosity of the objects could be accomplished with glazes. Fine linen is required as support.

Burnsville, MN - United States

Long hours in this painting are finally justified. I am much faster painter now.

Saint George, UT - United States

Splendid detail!!! Congrats on being featured in Painterly Fine Art Group!

Coffee Balkanica

Dan Petrov

Painting - Oil On Canvas

Art makes me happy. Coffee gets me going. With such importance in my studio coffee deserved a proper description in painting.
All my props are actual tools for brewing a perfect cup of coffee "Balkan Style". Oriental pour and the coffee mill are hand made objects with intricate design produced with small hand tools.
Many charcoal studies have been produced in order to arrive to this setup. Painting is on dynamic rectangle of triple primed Belgian linen. The upper square that ends on the table edge is in dynamic relation with the rectangle below in the ratio of 1.618. Many of you will recognize Golden Mean. Primary and secondary diagonals are locations of very important tangents, overlapping and edges. It was the time of my intensive compositional studies.
My charcoal studie was developed to high definition and transferred to the canvas in order to follow my preliminary compositional decisions. Quick blocking of the local colors was followed by layers of direct paint. Each consecutive layer brought more of the texture and unity of light.
The final sessions have been devoted to some very intricate glazing techniques. Without getting into much of the technical issues it would be sufficient to say that additional vibrancy of colors have been produced with some very unusual sequences of color glazes. These color layers could be increasing or muting the hue with complementary colors. Great deal of experimentation is required and trial and error lead to results.
