Description
Small intestine. Coloured X-ray of the healthy small intestine of a woman. It is seen coloured orange. The small intestine is a folded, coiled digestive tube some 6.5 metres long and 3.5cm wide. It joins the stomach at one end and the large intestine at the other. This is where most digestion and absorption of food occurs. In the background are bones of the spine (green, top centre) and pelvis (at bottom). The patient was given a barium meal. Barium is a metallic element opaque to X-rays that enables soft tissues to be seen on X-ray. It enables abnormalities to be seen such as ulcers, tumours and Crohn's disease.
