Coming To Terms
Photograph - Digital Photograph
Gollum, a female White Handed Gibbon (aka Lar) Gibbon, was first introduced to me at Khao Kheow Open Zoo (KKOZ) when she was about 10 months old. Physically healthy as she was, it was plain to see Gollum was small for her age, and almost certainly this was due to the physiological trauma she suffered largely from having been separated from her mother.
A sad phenomena - both in the wild as well as in captivity - is that of some mothers gnawing at their offspring, and in the case of Gollum, her mother ended up biting off four of her baby's fingers before handlers came to her rescue. As mentioned above, Gollum's physical health is indeed very good, however, the animal handlers don't wish to take the chance of reintroducing her to her mother, so for now the only contact Gollum has is that of the wonderful staff at KKOZ's animal hospital, and by way of the occasional visit from me.
