Common froghopper (Philaenus spumarius) on a plant, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Also known as the spittlebug, this insect feeds on plants, using cutting and sucking mouthparts to extract the plant's sap. The wings are folded over the body, while its well-developed back legs are used for jumping great distances. On the head are compound eyes and sensory antennae. Magnification x12 when printed 10 centimetres across.
