Description
Compound eye of a gnat. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a compound eye from a fungus gnat (suborder Nematocera). The eye consists of many rounded lenses known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the gnat's brain. All the signals are combined by the brain to form a mosaic view of the world. The image seen is not very sharp but good at detecting movements. Between the lenses are hair-like structures called interommatidial bristles.
