Description
Compound steam locomotive, 19th-century artwork. Compound steam engines increased efficiency by expanding steam in two or more phases rather than just one. Commercially applied to locomotives in the 1860s, several European and US engineers developed designs. This is a French design, for the Chemin de Fer du Nord railroad company, improving on the earlier Webb design (see C013/8778). This depiction is part of plans produced for the 1889 Universal Exposition (World Fair) in Paris, France. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
