CLICK ON THE HAWK'S HEAD TO GET A CLOSE-UP VIEW OF ITS AMAZING EYE!
Although the stormy winter sky was still all around, the sun broke through for a while and lit up the prickly orange pods of a Sweet Gum tree. Near the top of the tree, a Cooper's Hawk was nearly camouflaged by the vivid colors around it. The bird caught my eye as it began to move on a branch, its pale throat reflecting the sunlight.... The bright red eyes of a Cooper's Hawk are phenomenal - and the bird's speed as it swoops down to grab an ill-fated slower bird for a meal is a sight to behold, albeit a sad one for bird lovers....

Congratulations on your feature in The Gold Standard; it's deliciously vivid
Susan Wiedmann replied:
Thank you, Henry! The hawk nearly blended in with those spike-filled orange pods. Perhaps that was his intent!

Congrats on the amazing capture! Wonderful timing and composition! Seen on Today's Best Art!
Susan Wiedmann replied:
Thank you very much, Chad! I had to run into my house to change lenses when I saw the hawk - I had been photographing bees on flowers until then. When I got back, the hawk was still in that tree!
