Coquina Rocks Washed by Ocean Waves At Colorful Sunset by Jo Ann Tomaselli
An area I enjoy photographing near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, is a coastal location which hosts the only coquina rocks that I know of in Southeastern NC.
This image was taken at mid tide when several of the larger rocks were still above the waterline. The ocean waves and a colorful sky blended blue, orange and pink created a tranquil view at sundown. The ocean was peaceful in the beautiful evening twilight as the gentle waves washed over the rock. A long exposure captures a wave as it washes around the edges of the coquina, creating the illusion of water traveling in slow motion.
Coquina is aa sedimentary rock that is composed either wholly or almost entirely of mollusc, trilobites, brachiopods or other invertebrate shells. The term coquina is derived from the Spanish word for cockleshells or shellfish.
