Coral reef. Coral reefs are extensive and diverse marine ecosystems. Corals themselves are tiny animals that live in colonies. Some form these hard calcium mineral structures, while others are soft and flexible. Different corals form a wide range of shapes. A coral reef provides a home to numerous different marine organisms, such as the fishes and the sea whip (trailing black strands) seen here. Other common reef organisms are sponges, starfish, molluscs and crustaceans. Photographed in the Red Sea, at St John's Reef off the coast of southern Egypt.
