New South Wales has around one hundred ocean baths that were built in the last century to protect bathers from the dangers of sharks, rips and waves. At the southern end of Mereweather Beach, Newcastle are the famous Mereweather Baths, the largest tidal pool in the Southern Hemisphere with what have become iconic numbered starting blocks. Cut into the rock platform, the baths opened in 1935 and have since weathered storms and king tides for over half a century.
Stained by rust and water, and pockmarked with age and algae, the solid manmade structure provides a wonderful contrast for the misty seawater which reflects the blocks with a deep shimmering indigo. The edge of the pool naturally leads your eye out to the glowing horizon at the point where the sun is about to appear, the start of a brilliant new day.
