Cross On The Cathedral
Photograph - Photography
The St. Louis Cathedral is about as New Orleans as you can get. I read somewhere that it is one of the most recognized buildings in the world. Even though I am Christian, I was not raised Catholic--but I have a LOT of Catholic friends. The inside of this building is exquisite. A parish was established on this site in 1720, but there have been new buildings here since then due to a calamitous fire in 1788, as well as restoration efforts in 1849 that led to a substantial portion of the Cathedral having to be rebuilt. If I were Catholic, I would have had my wedding in this church--but, as I mentioned before, I am not. I have seen many other brides who must not have been Catholic either, but wanted to be married here, too--as they were all dressed up in their wedding attire and actually participating in a wedding ceremony on Jackson Square with the church in the background. I got married in Riverside Baptist Church on Jefferson Highway...and typical of New Orleans, it rained that afternoon, so I was really glad our ceremony was inside! With all that said, no trip home is complete for me, until I have visited Jackson Square and seen this historic old church.
