Description
Cytidine deaminase. Computer model of the enzyme, activation-induced (cytidine) deaminase (AID). The tertiary structures of two protein complexes (purple and green) join to form the quaternary protein structure of AID. AID catalyses the breakdown (deamination) of the amino acid cytidine in RNA (yribonucleic acid), changing it to uridine. AID is a type of apolipoprotein B messenger RNA-editing enzyme catalytic (APOBEC) polypeptide (protein). Different APOBEC members use deamination for various human biological functions. AID is thought to be critical for generating antibodies, crucial to the body's immune system.
