Daigoji Temple Gate Gargoyle - Kyoto Japan
Daigoji Temple was founded in the 9th century. It is a World Heritage Site and has on its grounds 18 designated Japan National Treasures.
I walked through a pedestrian gate and looked up for some reason. Glaring down at me was this temple gate guardian hidden high up in the rafters under the roof. These gargoyles are placed strategically at the perimeter of temple compounds to ward of any evil entity that may approach. I suppose this hidden guardian has been standing post at this gate for over a millenium.
