Daniel H. Williams (1856-1931), a prominent African American surgeon, was an early adopter of Lister's antiseptic surgery. An 1883 graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, he established the Provident Hospital and Training School Association where he performed the first successful open heart surgery on a stabbing victim. Ca. 1900.
