Fairies are surrounded in myth and legend, they are generally described as human in appearance with magical powers. Often called wee folk, faery, faerie, fay, fey, fae, a fairy is a mythical being often described as preternatural.
The most notable origin of fairies appears in the story The Little White Bird in the chapter about Peter Pan written by J.M. Barrie in 1902. Barrie wrote, "When the first baby laughed for the first time, his laugh broke into a million pieces, and they all went skipping about. That was the beginning of fairies."
The word fairy was ultimately derived from the Latin Fata, one of the Fates. Faierie is from Middle English, borrowing from the Old French Faerie meaning the land or realm, enchantment.
