Description
Defeat of the Spanish Armada. 18th-century artwork showing the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The Spanish Armada was an attempted invasion of England by a large Spanish fleet. A series of pursuits and engagements took place along the English Channel in July and August 1588, from Cornwall to Kent, ultimately resulting in defeat for the Spanish. This engraving, as stated across top, is from 'A New and Complete History of England' (1773) by Temple Sydney. Named at lower left and lower right are the book's illustrator, the British painter Samuel Wale (c.1721-1786), and Walker, the engraver for this artwork.
