Description
St. John's Episcopal church in the Bergen Hill neighborhood of Jersey City, NJ still stands with splendor and determination even as it slowly collapses upon itself.
St. Johns Episcopal Church, once the largest Episcopal congregation in New Jersey, was founded in 1868. Designed by J. Remsen Onderdonk, the grand Gothic edifice was erected in 1871, and helped to stimulate the settlement and growth of the Bergen Hill neighborhood. In the 1960s, St. Johns, led by legendary civil rights rector Robert W. Castle, became the epicenter of the Black Panther movement in Jersey City, NJ.
