Description
Delivery of baby using forceps. Artwork taken from William Smellie's textbook A sett of anatomical tables, with explanations, and an abridgement, of the practice of midwifery, published 1754. The baby is in a breech position, so has been born legs and body first with its head still above the pelvic bone. The obstetrical forceps are assisting the birth by manoeuvering the head. They were invented by Scottish doctor Smellie (1697-1763), known as the father of British midwifery.
