Description
This is the endangered Delmarva Fox Squirrel. Visitors often come to the Chincoteauge National Wildlife Refuge to see wild ponies or migratory birds, but the real rock star of the refuge is the Delmarva Fox Squirrel. Once nearly extinct do to loss of habitat, this cute little comedian is making a come back thanks to the efforts of the National Fish & Wildlife Service. I follow the wild Chincoteague Ponies all the time - but quite honestly - the DFS is a lot more fun to photograph. Ponies usually graze all day with their heads buried in the marsh. The DFS is very animated, he is always busy foraging for pine cone seeds, they scurry up and down the loblolly pines in the maritime forest, building large nests in the trees. They even play. Look closely and you will see they have little hands and fingers. I love watching them in their natural habitat, as in this image. Original image created by Master Captain Debbie Ritter.
