Demikhov's laboratory dogs. Vladimir Petrovich Demikhov (right, 1916-1998) was a Soviet surgeon who was famous for his pioneering transplant surgery. His most famous experiments were his head transplants on dogs, such as the two seen here. His first dog head transplants were performed in 1954. His transplantation work was carried out at the Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Medicine, where he was head of the transplantation laboratory. Photographed at the Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Medicine, in Moscow, Russia, in February 1967. For pictures of a set of dogs after transplantation, see images G352/403 to G352/405.
