Elephant Butte Lake State Park is a state park of New Mexico, USA, located 7 miles north of Truth or Consequences along the shore of Elephant Butte Reservoir. It is the largest state park in New Mexico and surrounds the state's largest reservoir. The 36,000-acre reservoir, created in 1916 across the Rio Grande, is 40 miles long with more than 200 miles of shoreline.
Unfortunately, the droughts have caused the lakes in the southwest to evaporate to extremely low levels. Elephant Butte Lake is now only 18 percent of what it used to be. I took this on a bright sunny day, the water was so still and the reflections were amazing. You will see Blue Heron, gulls and so many different species of birds in this area...you can camp on the water's edge....I call this "Desert Lake".
