Description:
The original title of this painting is Bear Medicine, illustrating a Crow medicine story about an incident that occurred generations ago. This storywas used as a teaching tool to illustrate values the people held dear such as devotion between partners, loyalty to family and community against outsiders. It spoke of bravery and sacrifice for the common good, all important aspects of tribal life in any culture.
This painting teaches about the nature of love, and giving of oneself to those we care for. Its also about self ?sacrifice for a greater good. There are times in our lives when it seems we are being challenged: are we willing to sacrifice our own well being, security or attaining desires for the well being of others? On a smaller scale we are offered small and great opportunities almost daily that seem to demand we give something of ourselves. For most of us these opportunities manifest daily in a variety of situations, varying from seemingly small, mundane situations to major catastrophe and can be on multiple levels, physical, emotional or spiritual levels. At the same time its important to maintain boundaries, keep our personal goals and responsibilities in mind, and not allow others to use and manipulate us?sacrifices made casually are no longer sacrifices, but something else.
