Description:

This beautiful hand-built disc was created by the Raku process. Raku as a style of pottery originated in the 16th Century. Today the pottery is bisque fired in an electric kiln, glazed, and taken to an outdoor kiln where they are preheated slowly. Once warmed, the temperature is brought up quickly to 1800 degrees F in about 30 minutes. When the glaze has the proper melt. the pots are lifted out with long tongs and placed in combustible materials such as sawdust, quickly covered with a metal container to creat a reduction atmosphere. The smoking and rapid cooling of the pot while beneath the container produce one of a kind irridescent color patterns.
