Dolley Madison was the wife of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States who served from 1809 to 1917. Before Madison became President, the widowed Thomas Jefferson held the office and had Mrs. Madison serve as "First Hostess" during his administration. She was the first wife of a President to be called "First Lady", which is a term President Zachary Taylor bestowed upon her when she died in 1849. After the death of her husband, James Madison, in 1836 at Montpelier, Virginia, Mrs. Madison returned to Washington, D.C., and for the remaining years of her life was regarded as the grande dame of Washington society. Her funeral in 1949 was the largest funeral in the history of the United States up until that time.
