Middle Temple Library
Photograph - Photograph
Dorothy Osborne, Lady Temple (1627-95), English letter writer. Osborne was born at Chicksands Priory in Bedfordshire into a noble family. She resisted intense pressure from her family to marry suitors chosen by them, instead carrying on a seven-year courtship with William Temple. This clandestine relationship was embodied in the letters Osborne wrote to Temple. These are widely regarded as being socially progressive and reveal much about society of the day, full of wit and insight. Osborne married William Temple in 1654. This photo-engraved portrait was published in the collected Letters from Dorothy Osborne to Sir William Temple of 1888.
