Description
British mathematician and biochemical theorist Dorothy Maud Wrinch (centre, 1894-1976) and US cell biologist Daniel Mazia (right, 1912-1996). Wrinch is best known for her attempt to deduce protein structure using mathematical principles and is credited with playing a large part in the beginnings of modern research in molecular biology. In 1932 Wrinch was one of the founders of the Biotheoretical Gathering, an inter-disciplinary group that sought to explain life by discovering how proteins work. Mazia is best known for his studies of the cell cycle, a term he coined. In 1951, along with Katsuma Dan, he isolated the mitotic apparatus that organise the chromosomes during cell division.
