Hanne Lore Koehler
Painting - Watercolor
I painted this watercolor painting called DRAGON CASTLE for my children's story book called "MY BROTHER AND I" by Hanne Lore Koehler. This is the story of two brothers and the sports, games and activities they enjoy together through summer and winter seasons. Like most children, they have a special wish for a pet which, for now, lives in their imagination. Featured here are the children on the beach building a sand castle. I included a couple of colorful dragons that appear to have snorkled to the beach from a distant dragon castle in the mist just off shore. To the brothers' terrified imaginary dog, the dragons are real and he hides in the sand castle.
We are very lucky to have two wonderful grandsons upon whom I based this story. Like most proud grandparents, we have an endless supply of family photos that I could use as reference in order to keep the facial features of the characters in the story consistent. After painting details of the children, I painted the beach and sand castle with the hiding imaginary dog. Then I added two enormous dragons: a goofy-looking green dragon with a snorkle and goggles and a purple dragon who puts on his friendliest smile to offer the boys a toy shovel. Then I painted a castle in the misty distance just off shore, the home of these imaginary dragons. I had as much fun creating the dog and dragons from my own imagination as, I'm sure, the children had.
