A Male Rufous Hummingbird with his eyes closed feeding on Yucca flowers, appearing to be in nectar heaven! Camp Verde, Arizona
Rufous Hummingbird - (Selasphorus rufus) As its common name suggests, the plumage of the male rufous hummingbird is largely rufous (reddish-brown), with a vivid, iridescent, orange-red throat patch, a green forehead, a white breast, and a white spot behind each eye. The male Rufous, glowing like a new copper penny, often defends a patch of flowers in a mountain meadow, vigorously chasing away all intruders (including larger birds). It is described as the feistiest hummingbird in North America. The female has green, white, some iridescent orange feathers in the center of the throat, and a dark tail with white tips and rufous base. The female is slightly larger than the male. Females and the rare green-backed males are extremely difficult to differentiate from the Allen's hummingbird. The female builds a nest in a protected location in a shrub or conifer. Males are promiscuous, mating with several females. Nests are built by the female and are a compact cup of grasses, moss, plant down, spider webs, and other soft materials, the outside camouflaged with lichens and moss. The rufous hummingbird lays 2 to 3 eggs, which are incubated by the female for 15 to 17 days. The chicks leave the nest after about 20 to 26 days. The Rufous hummingbird is surprisingly long-lived, with the oldest recorded individual surviving for over eight years. 0522
