On the map it was easy enough, just follow Shore Road in Peninsula State Park (Wisconsin) and you are there. Except....they neglected to mention that Shore Road isn't plowed in the winter, being left snow covered presumably for cross country skiers and snow shoe enthusiasts. Not to be deterred by such a minor inconvenience, I parked the car and set off on foot armed with the park map. Oh, did I mention there was no cell phone service? And it was snowing? And getting on to late in the afternoon? The perfect storm of things to bring about a not-so-good ending to this trek. Turned out the map was reasonably good so that I really could tell where I was and how far I had to go. Nevertheless, I did rejoice when the lighthouse actually came in sight! The Eagle Bluff Light is a lighthouse located near Ephraim in Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin (on the shore of Green Bay). Construction was authorized in 1866, but the lighthouse was not actually built until 1868 at a cost of $12,000. The lantern at the time was a 3 1/2 Fresnel built in Paris. It was automated in 1926 when an automatic acetylene gas light was placed in the lens. The former lighthouse keeper's home has been a museum since 1963. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. One website for the light says that is popular with visitors, but not on this dreary winter day. Still, for me it was a wonderful time to experience the solitude and harsh conditions that necessitated the use of lighthouses in the first place.
